Headstand

For me, the headstand is nearly as important as brushing my teeth. You need a little time until you are able to master it, but once learned, you will always be able to do it. Everyone can profit from this good exercise.

You start in this position, the arms are laid on the floor shaped as an imagined triangle. The hands are not folded, but placed one behind the other.
The crown of the head is placed on the floor, the hands then automatically surround the back of the head. The upper part of the body is raised by 'walking' forward with your feet. Just so far that your body doesn't fall over.
Now comes the moment: the legs are lifted and pulled towards your body to fully raise the upper part of the body. This should be done in an unhurried manner. Balance is held by the increased tension in the arms. If you have got this far, then the rest is easy.
Kopfstand in Vollendung This is the completion of the exercise and can easily be trained to a duration time of 30 minutes. At the beginning you might think your head will become swollen due to blood-congestion, but the vascular system learns fast to regulate this condition. Should you once loose balance, your hands can grab further back rapidly to regain balance. That is why the hands shouldn't be folded, to allow for greater mobility.

Effect

  • Strengthening of abdominal muscles
  • Increased inner secretion of the pineal gland / Epiphysis, pancreas and pituitary
  • Strengthening of the diaphragm and thus the breathing
  • Through force of gravity, expiration is easier, winds pass easier
  • Inner organs fall back into their original places due to gravity
  • Better blood circulation of many organs which are not well supplied with blood: the base of the lungs (near the diaphragm) is better supplied then the top of the lungs. The exercise helps correct this.
  • Has a positive influence on nervousness, sleep disturbance and other complaints.

Contra indications could be:

High blood-pressure and advanced years (ask your GP). Sensitive or less sturdy people should start the head stand very cautiously and carefully. Do headstand for just short periods at the beginning.
